Join Thousands of Volunteers Building Lasting Change in RVA

Building Change is a one-of-a-kind community give-back experience that empowers volunteers of any age, background or affiliation to build lasting change in their community. ToolBank provides the tools, materials and designs; volunteers contribute their commitment, passion and time. Whether you’re looking to volunteer with an affinity group, as a family, or an individual we have options to suit any level of interest. We donate every item that Building Change volunteers build. To date, we’ve delivered nearly 1,000 picnic tables, benches, garden beds and outdoor classroom kits to nearly 100 local organizations!

Choose Your Own Building Change Experience

Corporate or Affinity Group

When your office, congregation or affinity group partners with the ToolBank for a service project, you’ll enjoy a totally unique volunteer experience that generates 3x the impact. You’ll use ToolBank tools, materials & designs at our warehouse, or your project site, to hand build outdoor furniture & placemaking features that will be donated to a local community-based organization in need. You can even hold your post-project happy hour right in our open-format community space.

Contact Adam@richmondtoolbank.org to schedule your group of 15-100 volunteers.

Remote Volunteer Projects

COVID-19 prompted us to completely reimagine how to empower volunteers in a way that doesn’t require large gatherings. Our remote Building Change volunteer experience allows families, friends and neighbors to bring ToolBank tools, materials & instructions right to your home or community project site. There, you can build on your own time, at your own pace while following written and video recorded instructions for building our skillfully designed outdoor furniture & garden features.

Join Us For A Sponsored Build

Throughout the year, some of our corporate partners sponsor the Building Change program which allows us to provide opportunities for volunteers of any age or background to use ToolBanks tools, materials & designs to hand-build awesome placemaking features. Sponsored builds are a great way to get some experience with power tools and build cool things that will be used by thousands of Richmond youth and families— no skills required.

#ProjectPicnic

Since 2016 we’ve partnered with over 4,000 volunteers to build and donate nearly 1,000 picnic tables, benches, garden sets, bird nesting boxes and other outdoor furniture & placemaking features. We’ve received countless requests to sell these kits to individuals and now, by popular demand we introduce #ProjectPicnic!

With just a few quick clicks, you can purchase, pickup, and build your very own patio paradise! We provide the pre-cut materials, and designs; you pick them up and build on your own time. It’s that easy.  So, let’s get to it!

Your volunteer support is critical to the ToolBank’s success as it enables us to equip hundreds of not-for-profits and their volunteers with the tools needed to completed thousands of service projects every year. There are many ways you can volunteer at the ToolBank and we gladly welcome individuals and groups.

Donate Funds

Your monetary gift is critical. It helps us maintain our massive inventory of tools and 10,000 square feet of warehouse space that serves as the center of our operations. It allows us to grow and sustain our programming, reducing the cost of service and maintenance projects and enabling local agencies to focus more of their resources on their mission.

Donate Tools

Your donation of tools is critical to the success of our tool lending program. Tools require a lot of care and attention, from blade replacements to oil changes, and so your donation of accessories and supplies are equally important. We gladly accept accept donations of new and gently used tools, tool accessories, consumable project supplies, and other items that can be used in our warehouse or office.
